Just Starting?

The main thing to remember is NOT to buy any archery equipment! Most clubs will supply you with all the equipment to get you started. If you walk into an archery shop and buy a bow, you will almost certainly walk out with the wrong bow for you.

The range of bows and arrows available can be quite confusing and it is advisable to seek advice from someone more Coursed before you make a decision to purchase. Most people start by buying the bow to match their skill level and physical attributes, taking into consideration bow poundage, arm length, bow type (Recurve or Compound) etc. The beginners Course, bows available in the club and advice rom other archers will help you make a decision on bow poundage, and you can then consider buying arrows.

One of the more common mistakes for an inCoursed archer to make is to buy a bow that is too powerful for them. It will be fine in the shop, test shooting it only a few times, but during competition you could shoot 130 arrows or more. If the bow is too powerful you will get tired, and your control, accuracy and scores will decrease, and may spoil your enjoyment of the sport.

You need to buy arrows to match the bow, the poundage of the bow and the style of shooting you intend to follow. Arrows are spined according to the poundage of the bow they are to be shot from. Archery shops typically stock every type of arrow for every type and poundage of bow, so finding the right one should not be a problem. Again, it is advisable to seek the advice of an Coursed archer.

Further information can be found on our general advice page.

Please Note:
We can only consider applications for new members from people who have successfully completed the beginners course, unless they have previous experience of archery and/or are transferring from another Club. Completion of the course does not guarantee acceptance as a member of the club. All applications are subject to the approval of the membership at a general meeting and membership levels at that time.

Please remember that all activities are run by volunteers from the Club, and are dependent on their goodwill.
